A topographic name from Middle Low German and Dutch brame, the broom and bramble scrub that took over poor ground: it belonged first to whoever lived beside it. The particle de marks origin from a place rather than descent from a person, and is the ordinary Dutch and Flemish form.
The name is rare and sits along the German and Dutch border, where the same word is written Braam, Brahm and Bram from one parish to the next. Its best-recorded bearer, the surveyor Johann Wilhelm Gerard de Brahm, was born in the Rhineland in 1718 and spent his later life mapping the southern American coast.
A separate German Brahm exists as a short form of Abraham. The two are unrelated, and the spelling alone will not tell them apart.
Bestow the name a title it never had
An honorific Lord or Lady certificate in the de Brahm name, hand-finished and sealed, with a square metre of Scottish woodland dedicated alongside it. A novelty, magnificently done — and a good deal more fun than a family tree.
